Ross Feller Casey won a major $9.6 million medical malpractice verdict in Berk County last week against several medical providers that failed to timely diagnose and treat cervical cancer in a young girl.
The verdict is believed to the largest ever awarded for a medical malpractice case in Berks County, Pa. The jury reached the verdict after deliberating two days following eight days of testimony.
The girl, now 15, had sought treatment from medical providers for vaginal bleeding several times, the first dating back to 2014. However, it wasn’t until 2016, at the age of 11, that she was diagnosed with cancer.
Van Naarden told The Reading Eagle that it was disturbing that medical professionals dismissed the girl’s medical problems.
“They basically said this is menstrual bleeding … at an early age and don’t worry about it,” he said. “And as a result of their failure to work her up (test) for that bleeding, her cancer went undiagnosed and progressed to a very advanced stage.”
